about.
Welcome to currents and waves radio, a live streaming program of experimental sound, environmental recordings, artist talks, performances, presentations, music, and much more.
The question of “how do we occupy space differently” undulates and oscillates throughout currents and waves. Broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, this radio is curated by Other Sights as a way for listeners to situate themselves outside the realm of the visual, this rich audio program encourages awareness and exploration of ‘what cannot be seen’ as central to a richer understanding of public space.
In its original format this radio was a 24hr program running from January 13-26, 2020. Using the fluid structure of tidal forecasts, currents and waves (2020) expanded on the themes of Other Sights’ parallel Sydney Festival program the future is floating - a floating exchange between 16 artists from Canada and Australia. The Future is Floating explored radical ways of reconfiguring relationships, language, community, migration, and nationhood.
Following on from January, this station continued to broadcast the aforementioned programming throughout 2020. With the isolation brought on by a global pandemic, the notion of ‘what cannot be seen’ felt all the more relevant as our thoughts turned towards a tiny but deadly virus that affected many facets of public life. This program was appreciated long after the festival wrapped in early 2020 as those working from home tuned in regularly.
Throughout 2023-2024, the station continues to broadcast. Like the foreshore, it is constantly changing. It ebbs and flows with old and new audio. Ideas propagate and drift through a range of topics including crisis, resilience, the foreshore, deep listening, Indigenous activism, and the Blue Cabin. Program formats range from podcasts and radio-dramas to experimental audio-zines, music playlists, and nature reserve broadcasts.
Many thanks to each and every one of the generous program contributors. We hope this listening experience leaves you intrigued, challenged, and deeply satiated. currents and waves will broadcast through to 2024. We hope you continue listening to this powerful and diverse program over the next couple of years. Thanks for Tuning in!
